Are Dental X-Rays Safe? Here’s What You Need to Know

Dr. Sumbul Naqvi • August 13, 2025

At Atlantis Dental, one of the most common questions we hear from patients is:
“Do I really need dental X-rays every year?”

It’s a great question — and we’re glad you’re asking it! When it comes to your health, staying informed is always the right move.

 So, Are Dental X-Rays Safe?

Yes — absolutely. Especially when using modern digital X-ray technology like we do here at Atlantis Dental.

Digital X-rays emit very low levels of radiation — in fact, you’re exposed to more radiation during a short airplane flight or even just a regular day outdoors than from your dental X-rays.

Here’s a comparison to help put it in perspective:

  • Bitewing dental X-ray = 0.005 millisieverts (mSv)
  • 4-hour airplane flight = 0.02 mSv
  • Daily background radiation = 0.008–0.01 mSv

Why We Take X-Rays

Dental X-rays are more than just routine — they’re a powerful diagnostic tool. X-rays allow us to see:

- Cavities hiding between teeth
- Early signs of infection or bone loss
- Hidden wisdom teeth or cysts
- Problems below the gumline that can’t be seen during a visual exam

With regular X-rays, we can catch problems early, when they’re easier (and cheaper!) to fix. Skipping X-rays might save time today — but it can cost you a lot more later.

What About Protection?

At Atlantis Dental, we always take extra steps to ensure your safety:

- We use digital sensors, which use up to 90% less radiation than traditional film
- We provide lead aprons and thyroid collars during every X-ray
- We only take X-rays when they’re clinically necessary — not just out of habit

If you’re due for your annual cleaning or checkup, we’ll let you know if X-rays are recommended — and we’ll explain exactly why.

Now’s the perfect time to stay on top of your oral health. If it’s been a while since your last cleaning or set of X-rays, give us a call — we’re here to help you keep your smile healthy, confident, and bright.

It’s one of the most common questions we hear — and it’s a fair one. Most people think dental pain is the only sign that something’s wrong. But the truth is, gum disease is usually silent until it’s in its advanced stages. By the time there’s pain or loose teeth, it may already be too late to reverse the damage. Here’s what really happens — and why deep cleanings are so important, even if your teeth feel fine.

I know this heat wave has been especially intense — one of the toughest Massachusetts has seen in a long time. So I wanted to personally check in and share a few quick wellness tips to help you stay safe, hydrated, and keep your smile healthy during this time. Here are my top tips for surviving the heat wave (and protecting your teeth at the same time): 1. Stay hydrated — even indoors! Dehydration can sneak up on you, especially if you’re in air conditioning all day. Dry mouth caused by dehydration can lead to bad breath and cavities, so drink water regularly even if you’re not sweating. 2. Avoid sugary and fizzy drinks Sodas, energy drinks, and sweetened iced teas can actually dehydrate you more. And while sparkling water counts as water, its carbonic acid can wear down your enamel if consumed too frequently. 3. Snack on hydrating foods Watermelon, cucumbers, oranges, and strawberries are all water-rich and support your overall health and hydration. 4. Don’t chew ice It might be tempting, but ice can crack your teeth or damage fillings. 5. Use SPF lip balm Don’t forget to protect your lips — especially the lower one. It’s the most prone to sunburn and long-term damage. 6. Get your Vitamin D naturally Just 10 minutes of sunlight a day (without sunscreen) can give you your daily dose of Vitamin D, which helps reduce inflammation in your gums and supports strong bones and immunity. 7. If your mouth feels dry, switch to an alcohol-free rinse It can soothe irritation and protect your enamel. I hope you’re staying cool, safe, and smiling. If you need help with dry mouth, tooth sensitivity, or just want to schedule a visit — we’re always here for you. Take care of yourself — and your smile!
