Patient in Framingham MA
  • Broken Tooth

Big or small, a broken tooth can lead to more issues with your oral health. This could be a small chip, a fracture, or a tooth that has completely broken in half. Whenever there is damage to a tooth, an x-ray allows us to see if the damage has gone deeper than expected and is affecting your tooth’s roots. In some cases, a broken tooth can expose the inner layers, making it more susceptible to infection or sensitivity. Acting quickly helps prevent further damage. Our dental team can repair these issues, relieve your pain, and restore your tooth’s function and appearance.

  • Severe Tooth Pain

Tooth pain could mean other issues lie beneath the surface, such as cavities or infected teeth roots. If your teeth are suddenly feeling sensitive to hot or cold temperatures, or if they hurt when you consume something sugary, this is a sign of tooth decay. Ignoring the pain could result in further damage, such as abscesses or tooth loss. A thorough examination can answer what’s causing your pain and how to fix it. Whether it requires a filling, root canal, or other treatment, our emergency dentist will provide relief and restore your dental health quickly and effectively.

  • Extractions

Saving healthy teeth is always our priority, but when the tooth structure is past salvaging, an extraction could be the answer. If your tooth is decayed, it can cause pain, bleeding, and swelling in your gums. Delaying treatment may lead to infection or affect adjacent teeth. Come see our emergency dentist right away, so we can either repair your tooth or, if needed, extract it to relieve your pain and protect your overall oral health.

  • Wisdom Tooth Extractions

If left untreated, an impacted wisdom tooth could cause damage to your surrounding teeth and gums. It can also lead to crowding if there isn't enough room for your wisdom teeth to come in. Over time, this pressure may result in misalignment of nearby teeth, requiring orthodontic intervention. Wisdom teeth extractions can not only relieve discomfort but also prevent complications such as infections or cysts, helping you maintain a healthy smile.

  • Infection or Swelling

The presence of infection and swelling can be the result of a variety of factors, such as gum disease or an abscessed tooth. If your gums are bleeding, swelling, feeling hot, or sore, you may have a gum infection. Without treatment, infections can spread, causing further damage to your teeth, jawbone, or overall health. With an exam, we can get to the root of the problem, provide appropriate treatment, and get your gums healthy again.

  • Broken Dentures

Accidents happen! If your dentures break, see our emergency dentist! We can repair or replace your dentures fast and get you back to doing the things you love!

  • Broken Fillings or Crowns

If your filling or crown has fallen out or broken, visit our emergency dentist right away. Lost fillings and crowns can cause severe tooth pain and make it difficult to eat or drink anything. We can repair your crown or filling to get you smiling again in no time!

Emergency Care During the Pandemic

This patient was seen because her dentist was closed during the Covid 19 Pandemic. As our office team was well prepared in the best infection control protocols under Dr. Naqvi's leadership, we were able to stay open and help patients of other doctors in the community. We got her in for an emergency, and resolved her dental problem. She could not go to the Bahamas but we brought the Bahamas to her while getting her healthy.

Alex used to have severe migraine headaches. All his tests at his physician were fine. He was referred to Dr. Naqvi by the local emergency room. Dr. Naqvi diagnosed his problem and treated it immediately. He does not suffer from headaches anymore. Plus he loves his new smile.

    • Gently rinse your mouth with a warm saltwater solution several times a day to reduce bacteria and ease discomfort.
    • Avoid vigorous rinsing or brushing near the affected area until the pain subsides.

  • Managing Bleeding

    • Avoid strenuous activities that could increase blood flow to the area.

How to Relieve Pain from a Dental Emergency

When you call Atlantis Dental for an emergency dental appointment, we will do our best to get you seen right away. While you’re waiting for your appointment, there are a few things you can do at home to relieve the pain or discomfort you’re experiencing.

For most dental emergencies, you can try over-the-counter pain medicine if you follow the directions on the packaging. Ice packs and cold compresses are also simple and effective solutions for pain and swelling. Finally, a warm saltwater rinse can help relieve pain and remove debris from your mouth. Mix ½ tsp of salt in 8 oz of warm, clean water. Swish it around your mouth and spit it out. You can repeat a saltwater rinse as often as needed until you see our emergency dentist.

First-Aid Tips for Common Dental Emergencies: Immediate Actions to Take

If you are experiencing one of the dental emergencies listed below, call our office at (508) 270-5050 to schedule an emergency appointment and follow the first-aid tips given.

If you are experiencing one of the dental emergencies listed below, call our office at (508) 270-5050 to schedule an emergency appointment and follow the first-aid tips given.

  • For a knocked-out adult tooth

If your adult tooth gets knocked out, there is still a chance we can save it if you act fast. When you find the tooth, pick it up by the crown (not the roots!) and rinse it with a gentle flow of clean water. Place the tooth back in its socket if you can. Use gentle pressure to hold it in place, but don’t force it. If you can’t get it to go in, or if it is broken, put your tooth in a small cup of milk or a saline solution to keep it moist. Avoid letting the tooth dry out, as this can reduce the chances of successful reattachment. Bring it with you to our office for your emergency appointment, and call us right away for immediate attention. Acting quickly increases the likelihood of saving your tooth.

  • For a chipped or broken tooth

Rinse your mouth with warm, not hot, clean water to remove any debris. If you’re bleeding, hold a piece of gauze bandage to the wound until it clots, which should take about ten minutes or less. Use an ice pack or cold compress to reduce swelling and pain where the injury occurred. Over-the-counter pain relief can also help manage discomfort until you arrive. If you can find the piece of your tooth that broke off, place it in a small container with milk or saline solution and bring it to your appointment. Avoid chewing on the injured side to prevent further damage. Our dental team is here to repair the tooth and restore your smile. Learn more

  • For a toothace

Thoroughly rinse your mouth with warm, not hot, clean water. Consider using a saltwater solution (½ tsp salt in 8 oz water) to relieve pain and clear out food particles from between your teeth. Gently floss around the affected tooth to remove anything stuck that may be causing the pain. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help, but avoid placing aspirin directly on the gums as it can cause irritation. If the pain persists or becomes severe, this could indicate an underlying issue like an infection or cavity. Contact us immediately to prevent further damage and get the care you need to restore your comfort.  Learn more

  • For an oral abscess

You need to see our emergency dentist as soon as possible if you have an oral abscess. The abscess can spread infection to other parts of your body if left untreated. While waiting for your appointment, try rinsing with a saltwater solution of ½ tsp salt in 8 oz of warm water to relieve the pain and remove any debris or pus. Applying a cold compress to the outside of your cheek can help reduce swelling. Avoid pressing or poking the abscess, as this can make it worse. Our emergency dentistry services will address the abscess and help you prevent further complications.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Should I Call the Dentist if I Have a Dental Emergency?

Yes – it depends on the situation. If you're experiencing pain, swelling, bleeding, or trauma to your mouth, please call us immediately.

Here are a few examples of when you should call right away:

    • Painful tooth: May indicate infection – urgent care needed.
    • Swelling or bleeding: Call immediately to prevent complications.
    • Broken tooth still attached to the gum: This often worsens and must be treated quickly.
    • Tooth knocked out: If the whole tooth is out (root and all), do NOT clean it. Place it in a cup of milk and get to us within the hour — we may be able to re-implant it.
  • What Are Common Dental Emergencies?

    • Toothaches or infections
    • Knocked-out or broken teeth
    • Lost fillings or crowns
    • Denture or bridge damage
    • Wisdom tooth pain or swelling
    • Bleeding gums
    • TMJ pain
    • Loose implants or implant crowns
    • Severe gum disease symptoms
  • Can You Treat Emergencies the Same Day?

Yes! At Atlantis Dental, we strive to treat all emergencies the same day, especially if you’re in pain.

  • What Happens During an Emergency Visit?

    • We take an X-ray of the affected area.
    • Dr. Naqvi evaluates and discusses the diagnosis with you.
    • We present a treatment plan and review payment options.
    • We offer several financing options and accommodate all credit levels.
  • How Much Does an Emergency Visit Cost?

Our emergency consultation fee is only $49, which includes the exam and one X-ray. There are no hidden fees — we go over all treatment and payment plans before anything is done.

  • Do You Offer After-Hours Emergency Care?

Yes! We have an after-hours emergency line with a voicemail system. Our AI assistant monitors messages in the evenings and on weekends, and the doctor will call you back or schedule you first thing the next day.

  • Will My Emergency Visit Be Painful?

No. If you're in pain, Dr. Naqvi will numb the area first before any X-rays or exams are done. Our goal is to make you comfortable as soon as you walk in.

  • Do You Treat Emergency Extractions and Wisdom Teeth?

Yes. After evaluating your X-ray, Dr. Naqvi will determine if the tooth can be saved or needs to be extracted. In many cases:

    • Extractions and bone grafts/implants are done the same day.
    • Wisdom teeth can be removed in-house after evaluation.
    • Antibiotics and pain meds may be prescribed if you're too swollen to open your mouth.
  • What if I Wait Too Long to See a Dentist?

    Delaying care can lead to:

    • Emergency room visits
    • Abscesses needing surgical drainage
    • Permanent tooth loss
    • Higher costs and missed work time
  • What Should I Bring With Me to My Emergency Visit?

    • A list of prescription medications (especially blood thinners, heart or BP meds)
    • Info on any painkillers you've taken
    • Your insurance info (if applicable)
  • Do You Treat Tmj or Jaw Pain Emergencies?

Yes. Sudden or severe TMJ pain during stress can cause:

    • Migraines
    • Jaw locking
    • Loss of sleep

We offer options to relieve the pain and prevent future flare-ups.

  • What if My Crown Came off or My Implant Feels Loose?

    • Crowns can come off even when eating soft foods — get it re-cemented within 24–48 hours to prevent shifting.
    • Loose implant crown? It may just need tightening.
    • Loose implant itself? This could indicate infection and must be treated quickly.
  • Is Bleeding While Brushing Normal?

No. Bleeding gums are a sign of gum disease, which can lead to tooth loss if ignored. Early-stage gum disease is very treatable — don’t delay care.

  • How long will the emergency visit take?

Most visits take 30–60 minutes depending on the severity of the issue. We aim to relieve your pain quickly and plan any follow-up care.

  • What Happens After the Emergency Visit?

We recommend a comprehensive exam and full-mouth X-rays to prevent future emergencies. A dental emergency is often a sign of deeper oral health issues that need to be addressed.

  • Does My Dental Insurance Cover My Emergency Visit?

In most cases, yes — dental insurance plans typically cover the cost of emergency visits. If you don’t have insurance, our fee is $49 (includes exam and X-ray).

  • What if I Can’t Afford the Treatment the Doctor Recommends?

We offer multiple financing options and payment plans for all budgets and credit levels. We’ll help you get the permanent care you need to prevent your emergency from getting worse.

  • Can I Walk in for a Dental Emergency, or Do I Need an Appointment?

While walk-ins are accepted, we recommend calling ahead so we can prioritize your care and minimize your wait time.

  • What if I’m Scared or Anxious About Going to the Dentist?

You're not alone. Dr. Naqvi and our team provide gentle, compassionate care and explain everything before starting. We offer comfort options to reduce anxiety.

  • Can You Prescribe Antibiotics or Pain Medication Before I Come In?

If you are a current patient of record (seen in the past 12 months), we may prescribe over the phone if appropriate. New patients must be seen in person.

  • Do You Treat Children With Dental Emergencies?

Yes, we treat both children and adults. We’re fully equipped to handle pediatric dental emergencies with gentle care.
