Tooth Extraction & Prevention in Framingham, MA

We believe in helping you keep your natural teeth as long as possible. But sometimes, removal becomes necessary. Below is how we manage extractions — and how we integrate prevention, comfort, and planning into every case.

Why Extraction
& Prevention Matters

Even with the best oral care routine, teeth sometimes become compromised beyond repair. When problems like severe decay, cracking, infection, or large bone loss make saving a tooth unviable, extraction may be the only safe option. Wisdom teeth, extra (supernumerary) teeth, or extremely crowded teeth are also common candidates.

At Atlantis Dental, our goal is not just to remove a problem tooth, but to do so in a way that preserves your comfort, protects surrounding tissue, and prepares your smile for long-term health.

  • Tooth Extractions — Gentle, precise, and focused on your comfort.
  • Oral Surgery — Expert care for even the most complex cases.
  • Root Canal Therapy — Saving smiles, one tooth at a time.
  • Bone Grafting — Building strong foundations for lasting results.
What Extractions and Prevention
Services We Offer

Here’s a detailed look at the extraction and prevention services provided at our Framingham office

Tooth Extractions

We focus on preserving natural teeth, but when extraction is necessary, we make the process as comfortable and safe as possible. Extractions may be needed for:

  • Severely decayed or damaged teeth that can’t be restored
  • Teeth with advanced bone loss or infection
  • Impacted or problematic wisdom teeth
  • Extra (supernumerary) teeth or crowding issues
Oral Surgery

Our team is trained to perform a variety of minor surgical procedures to support your oral health, including:

  • Removal of impacted teeth
  • Surgical bone or gum adjustments when needed
  • Biopsies and soft tissue procedures
Root Canal Therapy

When possible, we aim to save your natural tooth. Root canal therapy is performed to treat infection and inflammation inside the tooth, preventing the need for extraction while relieving pain and preserving function.

Bone Grafting

When teeth are lost or bone is damaged, bone grafting helps rebuild structure. This treatment supports future dental implants, preserves the shape of your jaw, and prevents neighboring teeth from shifting out of place.

Home Care Education & Support

You play a vital role in your oral health. We help by:

  • Teaching proper brushing, flossing, and interdental cleaning
  • Suggesting the best toothbrushes, floss, picks, water flossers, mouth rinses, etc.
  • Recommending night guards if you grind or clench your teeth
  • Advising on nutrition, sugar intake, and acidic foods
  • Working with you on quitting tobacco or vaping (which greatly harm gums and teeth)

 How Often Should You Visit?

  • Generally healthy patients: Every 6 months (twice per year)
  • Higher risk patients (history of gum disease, implants, complicated restorations, smoking): Every 3 to 4 months
  • Post–deep cleaning / periodontal treatment: Maintenance cleanings often every 3 months to prevent relapse
Your dentist will tailor a schedule based on your condition, risk factors, and past dental history.

We always aim to preserve teeth when possible. Extractions are considered when a tooth is too decayed, cracked, or infected to be restored or if a wisdom/extra tooth is causing recurrent problems.
What Happens After a Tooth is Pulled?
• Some discomfort is expected — we’ll provide pain management and antibiotics as needed.
• Rest for at least 24–48 hours; avoid strenuous activity for a few days.
• Start with soft, cool foods. Avoid chewing on the extraction side and brush gently after 24 hours.
What If Bleeding Continues?
• Bite on gauze for 30 minutes.
• If still bleeding, try a wet black tea bag for another 30 minutes (tannins help).
• Persistent bleeding is not normal — contact us.
What Is a Dry Socket?
A dry socket occurs if the blood clot fails to form or is dislodged, exposing bone and nerves, causing intense pain. Symptoms may show a few days post-extraction, and pain meds may become ineffective. To prevent dry socket:

• Avoid smoking or vaping for at least 48 hours
• Don’t drink through a straw
• Avoid vigorous rinsing or spitting
